The Peak District Boundary Walk is an epic challenge that is inspired by the founder of our charity, the pioneering environmentalist Ethel Haythornthwaite.
The 190 mile walk stretches from the moorland tops of the South Pennines to the gentle limestone scenery of the Derbyshire Dales. The route embraces the urban edges of Sheffield and Oldham, as well as Staffordshire’s rugged moorland and the undulating slopes of Cheshire.
You can complete the walk in stages throughout the year (and beyond!) or take on the challenge all in one go, it's up to you. So tie up your boots, gather your friends and family and experience the breath-taking views of a thriving countryside!
You set the pace with the option to walk or even run as many of the Peak District Boundary stages as you want. You can complete the challenge in one go or take as long as you need. Either way, it's up to you. This epic challenge will leave you with an unforgettable sense of accomplishment.
You decide how many stages you'd like to complete and when. Track your own progress manually using our Peak District Boundary app or through your existing Strava account.
Get your family, friends and colleagues to sponsor you. You'll raise money for CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire whilst enjoying the stunning scenery of one of England's most beloved national parks.
We're on a mission to protect the region's green spaces and countryside landscapes to ensure that they thrive for generations to come.
As a leading environmental charity, we protect, enhance and promote a beautiful, thriving countryside.
We stand for a countryside that enriches all of our lives, regenerating our wellbeing, and that we in turn regenerate, protect and celebrate.
Ethel Haythornthwaite was an environmental campaigner, and a pioneer of the countryside movement. She established the Sheffield Association for the Protection of Rural Scenery, in May 1924. This went on to become the local branch of CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire in 1927.
Ethel was instrumental in developing a greenbelt around Sheffield and designating the Peak District as the first National Park. The Peak District Boundary route broadly follows the park's boundary, as originally envisaged by Ethel.
Throughout our Centenary year, we encourage you to join us and celebrate the beautiful, stunning landscapes that our region has to offer. Every step you take will preserve the natural wonders that Ethel Haythornthwaite fought so passionately to protect.

The Peak District Boundary Walk was originally created by CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire in 2017 (CPRE PDSY also represents the Campaign for National Parks in the Peak District, we do this as 'Friends of the Peak District'). The route aims to raise awareness of the Peak District National Park's outstanding natural beauty and lesser known areas, and we hope taking part will encourage you to cherish and protect it. Together, we can help our beautiful countryside thrive, for everyone’s benefit - now and for generations to come. Please respect, protect and enjoy the countryside.
